M and M Flower Sugar Cookies

These are the other cookies I baked for my daughter's field trip day.  I searched my favorite cooking blogs for a recipe to use up all of the M and M's from Halloween.  And of course I found a great recipe on Jamie Cooks It Up!.  She makes the best cookies!  It was the perfect recipe since my daughter's ultimate favorite cookie is a sugar cookie.  Instead of putting the M and M's on the inside of the dough, I placed them in a flower decoration on the top of the dough before baking.  I think they turned out pretty cute and we all agreed they taste great too.  You can see all the M's on them and I was able to make every cookie have all the colors.  You could also make these with the other M and M flavors and holiday colors.  These would be really cute using the Valentine color M and M's.  I bet these cookies will be a winner with Madison's friends on the bus today!

Ingredients:

2 sticks butter, softened
1 1/2 C white sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
3 C all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cream of tartar
pinch of salt
M and M's, assorted colors

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy, about 3 minutes.  Add the eggs and vanilla and mix for 2 minutes.  Sift in the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt into the wet ingredients.  Mix just until combined.

Form into 1 inch round balls and place on a non-stick baking sheet.  Press down the cookie dough slightly with your hand.  Press the M and M's into the top of each cookie in a flower shape.  You can use even more M and M's than I did.  This was my first time making these.

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cookie starts to crack.  Remove from the oven and let sit on the hot baking sheet another 5 minutes.  Remove cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Note:  These cookies should be taller and fluffier with the extra baking soda and cream of tartar.  This was my 3rd baking item for the night and the kitchen was hot and the dough sat way too long between the mixing and baking.  I stopped in the middle to make dinner for my kiddos.  But the cookies taste just as good.

Store in an airtight container.  Enjoy!

  2. I made these this morning. They are absolutely wonderful!! They spread out big and still held there shape. They did not go completely flat. I have been searching for a recipe like this for a long time. I only changed one thing: I used 2 tsp. vanilla extract and 1 tsp. vanilla bean paste it just adds a little more vanilla flavor which I love. They are soft and chewy. I will be adding this to my favorite baking recipes. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I think it's better than the Malls cookies.
